If you’re like most of the pet lovers in the world, you can’t imagine going on a trip without your furry companion beside you. However, there are some things you should consider before you start planning that trip to another state or country. If you have never traveled with a pet before, here are some of the main points to keep in mind.
Visit The Vet
Regardless of what kind of pet you have, usually you have to take them to the vet to get examined before you take them on a flight. You need to have proof that they are suitable for travel and that they are not ill. The vet will provide you with a certificate which shows this information and ensures that you are ready for travel at any of the local airlines in the area.
Have The Right Carrier
If you don’t have a carrier that matches the airport standard, then you’re not going to be able to get on the plane. Do research about the carriers that are accepted so that you know you will be able to take your pet with you along for the ride.
Check With The Airline
Some airlines don’t even allow pets on their flights; others do. You need to check with the airline to find out what you need to do in order to bring your pet and if they are allowed. You should also find out if you need to purchase a seat for your pet or if they will be able to ride beside you at your feet.
Have Proof of Vaccination
If you’re going to another country, always bring proof of vaccinations and ensure that you have all of the vaccinations that are necessary to enter. You will have to research this before you leave because every country has their own requirements. Without this information, some countries won’t let you bring your pet across the border.
Know What To Do
Some pets need to be tranquilized in order to travel, while others do not. This tends to vary on the size of the animal and how excited they may become while they are flying. Generally, this is information that your vet will be able to provide you before you leave, so always remember to ask. Drugging small animals can be dangerous and can kill your pets, so do not do it unless your vet recommends it.
Take Pets Out When Needed
Before you go to the airport, don’t forget to spend those moments taking your pet out of the carrier and letting them walk around and handle any personal matters; they won’t be able to do this when you’re on the plane or in the airport and you won’t be able to clean up after them during the flight.
